The Nitidulid beetles that carry the oak wilt fungus are active in the spring and the fall so the best time to prune your live oaks is during the winter and summer. To avoid the threat of oak wilt, it is best to prune your trees in July, August and September. Take a break until the latter part of November when you can start up again and go until the end of January. Avoid pruning in February, March, April, May, June, October, and the beginning of November. Always paint the wound within 30 minutes of when you cut.
